Megathread: Majority of U.S. Senate Says Trump Impeachment Trial is Constitutional
The impeachment trial for former President Trump kicked off in the Senate on Tuesday, beginning with debate over the constitutionality of the House prosecuting a president who has already left office. After four hours of arguments by each side, the Senate affirmed by a vote of 56-44 that it is constitutional to try a former president. Six Republicans voted with Democrats, including Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), who had previously voted "no" on the question.
[Urban Fantasy Novel] Unforgettable: A Children of the Fallen Novel - the story of Cassidy “Cas” Dubois – a girl whose natural born talent of stealing memories has secured her a place within the local supernatural community – whether she likes it or not. Which she usually does not.
Mirroring the end of Season 5, we see Dean with Lisa, looking very unhappy. It’s clear he hasn’t gotten over losing Sam (or Cas).
10:04 Dean chases what he thinks is a monster, but it turns out to be a little dog. It looks very similar to the dog we saw in S4E6, which Dean mistook for a hellhound. In that episode, the dog was a symbol for Dean’s metaphorical fears of falling in love with a man. This time it’s being used as a symbol for Dean’s fear of a monster attacking his new family - but it could also be seen as the fear that his homosexual desires could harm his new family. Queer people sometimes feel out of place in the suburbs. Most people grow up with the idea that getting married, moving to the suburbs and having kids will make them happy - and we know Dean used to think that. But living in heteronormative society can feel stifling, like you have to hide parts of yourself to fit in. We see how Dean struggles because of his hunter instincts. We also see him lie to Lisa and hide parts of himself from her, even though she already knows he’s a hunter.
17:13 Dean asks Sam if Cas brought him back. Sam says he doesn’t know where Cas is. Dean looks sad. Sam tells Dean that he knows Dean always wanted a family. Once again, Lisa does not exist as a love interest so much as a symbol for Dean having a family and kids.
Episode 2
In this episode, Sam calls Dean to help him take care of a baby. Dean is shown being better at childcare than Sam is. This shows Dean’s character growth in that he’s getting more comfortable with his feminine side. But it’s also worth noting that taking feminine roles (like domestic chores and childcare) is one way films used to queer code men. It’s a harmful stereotype, but Gay men (especially bottoms) were thought to be like women.
38:40 This conversation with Lisa is riddled with subtextual phrases. “You’re white knuckling it, living like this. Like what you are is some bad, awful thing. But you’re not.” Lisa understands the duality of Dean - He wants to be a loving family man, but he also wants to be a hunter. There are some parts of Dean that she can’t understand, but she accepts that. This is what makes Lisa such a great partner. Often, when a bisexual person dates a straight person, they feel like they have to choose to ignore and repress the homosexual side of themselves. It’s not about wanting to have sex with both (this is a false stereotype), but more so about trying to fit a role in straight society and feeling like an imposter. Lisa is saying that she understands there’s more to Dean’s life than just her, and she accepts him the way he is.
Episode 3
The name of this episode is The Third Man, which is the name of a 1949 film noir. One of the film’s producers, complained that the script had homoerotic undertones. This name is also similar to the name of the previous episode, Two and a Half Men, which was referring to Sam, Dean and the baby. So it’s safe to assume the third man in this case is Castiel.
10:15 Dean tells the officer, “Woah, looking sharp Kojak.” Note: Dean hasn’t flirted with any other male cops since Castiel showed up in Season 4.
13:55 Dean says, “We should call Cas.” Sam says, “You’re kidding, right? Dean, I tried.”
Dean says, “I pray to Castiel to get his feathery ass down here.” He smiles under his breath. This is the first time we’ve seen Dean smile in this season, including all the time he’s spent with Lisa and Ben AND when he found out Sam was alive.
15:19 Sam says, “So what, you like him better or something?” Cas says, “Dean and I do share a more profound bond. I wasn’t gonna mention it.”
16:32 Cas tells Dean he came because of the case. Dean says, “Oh, well it’s nice to know what matters.” This is the season they start bickering like a married couple.
17:16 Dean says, “What is Chuck Heston’s disco stick doing down there anyway?” This is a reference to the film The Ten Commandments, which has a massive amount of gay subtext. Charles Heston, the actor Dean is referring to, is shown mostly naked, in chains and covered in oil.
Dean makes about ten times more eye contact with Cas than he ever did with Lisa
24:06 Sam asks if Balthazar was Cas’s friend, and Cas says, “A good friend.”
28:11 Dean makes a reference to Liberace, a famously gay performer. This is both an example of Dean making a queer reference, and Balthazar being queer coded.
Balthazar is the most heavily queer coded character in Supernatural. He has a lavish, frivolous lifestyle. He’s introduced in front of a piano with pink and purple lights and party music. He has a sly voice, stylish way of dressing, and is very sexual.
The way Balthazar interacts with Castiel is very familiar. There’s a lot of eye contact. He speaks in a soft, sensual tone. Castiel has already said they were close, but this scene implies a possible romantic or sexual history between them. Castiel says, “I grieved your death.” We saw him try to kill several other angel friends without mercy, including Anna and Uriel, so this puts Balthazar on a very different level from Cas’s other friends.
31:20 Balthazar says, “You proved to me that we could do anything, so I’m trying… everything.” Everything?
34:18 Balthazar, who claimed to not want to be involved in the fight, comes back to save Castiel’s life. He does this by saying, “Look at my junk.”
35:24 Balthazar expects Castiel to help him, but Cas takes Dean’s side. Balthazar looks at them and laughs. He knows.
Dean refuses to release Balthazar, but Cas lets him go. Cas disappears before Dean could ask why.
Episode 4
1:38 Bobby says, “Bite me.” Crowley says, “If that’s your thing.”
3:09 Crowley wrote a contract clause on Bobby’s genitals
13:10 I want to point out that Bobby and Rufus have the heterosexual version of Dean and Cas’s relationship. They’ve been friends for decades, they hunt together, they love each other like brothers, and they fight like a married couple. But there’s never a sense of romantic intimacy with them. They don’t stare longingly into each other’s eyes under the moonlight. They don’t have a “profound bond.”
25:28 Dean says, “I’m baring my soul here like a freaking girl.” Sexism.
36:27 Dean says, “You hear that, Crowley? That’s me flicking my BIC for you.” Why was this necessary?
Episode 5
7:13 The father expresses that he was disappointed in his daughter’s choices. Sam asks if he was talking about drugs. They find out she was into vampires. Note: Up until this point, every vampire in Supernatural has been either openly gay or bisexual, or involved in some sort of metaphor for gay sex (S1E20, S2E3, S3E7, S4E5, S6E5).
8:23 Dean picks up a vampire book and says, “Look at this, he’s watching her sleep. How is that not rapey?” Do you feel that way when Cas watches you sleep?
11:56 Dean watches two men make out at the vampire bar. Setting the tone for another gay sex analogy.
13:51 Dean says, “Are you wearing glitter?” The guy says, “I’m only doing it to get laid man.” Dean raises his eyebrows and says, “Does it work?” This boy.
A male vampire says from the alley, “You’re pretty.” Dean says, “I’m sorry pal but I don’t play for your team.” Note: This vampire is ugly and a creep. Dean gives a very different response to a cuter guy in S8E13.
15:07 The vampire attacks Dean and turns him
20:22 Dean throws Lisa against the wall, making another connection between the vampire blood lust and sexual desire
Dean pushes Ben against the wall and hurts him. Then he runs away. Lisa and Ben represent what Dean could have if he chooses to be normal (i.e. live a heterosexual life). But Dean is afraid that if he gives into his blood lust (homosexual urges), it will destroy his chances at having a family.
26:05 Dean sees a much younger, cuter vampire, checks him out and looks at his lips.
28:50 The creepy vampire continues being sexual toward Dean - calling him pretty, getting up near his face and asking how old he looks, etc.
33:30 Dean murders the vampires, starting with the cute young guy (the real threat to his heterosexuality)
35:13 The creepy vampire ominously says, “You’ve stopped nothing.” Meaning metaphorically, Dean still has that “blood lust” in him.
Episode 6
9:49 Sam says, “Dentist drilled a guy to death.” Dean opens his eyes and says, “You mean the… non-sexy kind of drilling, right?” Who hears dentist and drill and thinks about gay sex? Dean, you’re so unfulfilled.
13:36 Dean and Cas have another fight, then Cas ends up pouring Dean a drink while staring deeply into his eyes. Pouring a man a drink is sometimes used as homoerotic subtext, as it’s associated with seduction.
15:03 Dean is angry at Cas for leaving again. Cas tells Dean he will try to help with Sam - despite being in the middle of fighting a war. Dean looks lost when Cas leaves again, glances around the room, and takes another sip of his drink.
22:39 Lisa says, “You’ve got so much buried in there, and you push it down, and you push it down.” This is similar to what Dean’s ex girlfriend Cas said in S1E13. The only person who’s been able to get Dean to open up emotionally was Castiel, in S4E3.
33:23 The goddess says, “You know what happens when you base your life on lies, right?” Interesting phrasing. Dean lies a lot on the job as a hunter, but this implies a much greater lie. He recently lost Lisa because she said he’s repressing something.
Episode 7
3:18 Cas and Dean eye fucking
4:06 Very close proximity and more staring
7:13 Castiel says his true form is the size of the Chrysler building. Dean says, “Alright alright, quit bragging.” We know where your mind went.
7:46 Dean describes Cas checking Samuel’s soul as “angel cavity search”. Dean can’t stop sexualizing Cas today.
12:57 Dean pushes the guy up against a wall. Out of context this looks so homoerotic.
26:57 The alpha vampire says, “Dean, tell me, did you enjoy it?”
34:18 The alpha pinning Sam against the wall is also pretty homoerotic
35:18 Dean says, “You two know each other?” Crowley says, “Not in the Biblical sense.”
Episode 8
2:09 Crowley says, “Is that Bobby Singer? Give him a kiss from me.” Crowley makes gay jokes at straight men about as often as Dean does. Yet we know Crowley isn’t entirely joking, because we’ve seen him kiss two men now. Why do people assume Dean is just joking?
4:40 Dean says, “Crowley, he’s so far up our asses we’re coughing sulfur.” Dean has such a vivid imagination.
19:39 Sam looks through the binoculars at the naked Lucky
24:14 Dean holds up clothing and a dog collar, and says to Lucky (technically a naked man), “We can do this the easy way or the hard way.” Sam laughs. This sounds like a BDSM reference.
27:37 Lucky says, “Fetch this dick” to Sam
Episode 9
9:32 Dean is being chased by “aliens”. Sam says, “Third kind already? You better run man, I think the fourth kind is a butt thing.”
15:39 “Probing table!”
19:16 Dean is being attacked by a fairy. Fairy is a derogatory term for a gay man.
23:14 Sam says, “Dean… did you service Oberon, king of the fairies?” Service is sexual slang.
Episode 10
9:07 Dean asks Meg to untie him. She says, “Don’t pretend you don’t enjoy it.” Then a large man walks up and looks at Dean, and Dean says, “You gonna kiss me?” Dean looked at the guy’s ass as he walked away.
16:00 Cas finds porn on TV. Note: Cas has been angry every time he sees Dean recently, possibly because Dean was living with his new girlfriend. Cas is millions of years old. He knows what porn is. This episode really comes across as Cas trying to make his ex boyfriend jealous. Especially since he’s not helping them research or going back to his important mission in heaven right now. Cas has a lot of better things to do with his time, but he’s being petty.
16:20 Dean says, “Now he’s got a boner.” Dean looked at Cas’s dick, so I guess the attention seeking worked.
18:03 Meg says to Cas, “Keep talking dirty, makes my meat suit all dewy.” Dean looks uncomfortable and says, “Alright, simmer down.” Dean never told Meg to shut up earlier when she was talking like that to him. Cas’s attempt to make Dean jealous is definitely working.
19:16 Meg gives Cas the “fuck me eyes”. Dean looks angrily at Meg. Cas: 3 Dean: 0
19:44 Cas is across the room avoiding eye contact with Dean. Dean says, “You know, Cas, you could help.” Cas is still being prissy and trying to annoy Dean.
Close proximity, eye contact, sexual tension and Dean looking at Cas’s lips
24:57 Meg kisses Cas. Dean stops talking mid-sentence and stares incredulously. Cas flips Meg against the wall and kisses her back. Dean is in shock. At this point Castiel just spent a year watching over Dean in secret while he was with Lisa. This is definitely payback.
35:16 Crowley says, “So, to what do I owe the reach-around?”
39:25 Dean says to Cas, “I would have given you an hour with her first.” Cas says, “Why would I want that?” Proving that Cas was never attracted to Meg, he was just screwing with Dean.
39:49 Cas says, “I wish circumstances were different. Much of the time, I’d rather be here.”
Dean always swivels his head around when Cas leaves, but Sam never does.
Episode 11
13:49 Balthazar tells Sam to “go ask your boyfriend” (Cas)
14:51 Balthazar says, “I’m not a fan of your brother, so screwing him would delight me.” The only interaction he’s had with Dean so far involved Dean making him return a boy’s soul. However, Sam was also there and helped, as did Cas. The only reason I can assume Balthazar hates Dean is that Castiel chose Dean over Balthazar, his long-time “friend”. Balthazar is jealous that Castiel is in love with Dean.
28:36 This is how Supernatural portrays a man losing the love of his life. He falls apart, cries hysterically, and later tries to kill himself. This moment is very similar to the emotional response Dean has in Season 15 when Cas dies.
Episode 12
3:40 The title “Like a Virgin” flashes across the screen as Castiel walks up to Dean
Fun fact: The song “Like a Virgin” was actually written by a man, Billy Steinberg, who said it was about how he felt with a new partner. I can’t find anything conclusive about his orientation, but he never married or had any public relationships.
3:57 More eye fucking
25:00 Dean grunting while pulling repeatedly on a sword handle
33:22 The dragon says to Dean, “Where do you think you’re gonna stick that?”
Episode 14
5:30 Dean says, “You shove it down, and you let it come out in spurts of violence and alcoholism. Works for me.”
6:33 Dean grabs the heart of the (male) anatomy dummy
11:08 Sam nods at a male police officer, then Dean checks him out and looks at his crotch
11:30 Sam says, “That anatomy dummy you were molesting at the lab.” Dean says, “What exactly are you accusing me of?”
Dean gets very intimate with a male mannequin
26:32 Ben tells Dean that Lisa is going on a third date, and implies she’s going to have sex with her new boyfriend. Dean just raises his eyebrows. Compare this to dean’s face of complete shock in S6E10 when Cas kisses Meg.
Episode 15
The title of this episode is The French Mistake. According to Urbandictionary, a “French mistake” is: “When an otherwise straight male is persuaded to, or on a whim in the heat of the moment, engages in a homosexual act of which he later regrets and is ashamed.
Alluded to in the musical number of the same name in Mel Brooks' film "Blazing Saddles”.” The lyrics of the song The French Mistake are: “Throw out your hands. Stick out your tush. Hands on your hips, give them a push. You’ll be surprised you're doing the French mistake.”
2:38 Sam asks where Cas is. Balthazar says, “Oh, Cassie?” Cassie was the name of the girl Dean was in love with in S1E13, who also went by the nickname Cas.
38:34 Rafael shows up in a female body. This is the closest to transgender representation this show ever really gets. It poses the question: If Cas inhabited a female body, would it still be gay for Dean to stare at his lips?
39:51 Castiel comes in and saves Balthazar. Cas and Balthazar move in close to talk to each other, reminiscent of Cas’s body language with Dean. When the camera pans to Dean’s face, he looks a little jealous.
Episode 16
16:15 Rufus grabs Dean’s ear. Dean says, “Hey, why don’t you buy me a drink first!”
38:34 This is Bobby’s goodbye to Rufus. Bobby and Rufus were friends for decades. They were like brothers. Rufus saved Bobby’s life many times. They hunted together. And Bobby’s last memories of him are being told that Rufus could never forgive him, then stabbing him in the heart. Bobby and Rufus should arguably be closer to each other than Cas and Dean ever were. And yet compare this incredibly stoic scene to S15E18 when Dean cries over the loss of Cas. Bobby is less emotional over stabbing his best friend to death than Dean is over watching Cas voluntarily die.
Episode 17
18:43 Balthazar says to Dean, “You have me confused with the other angel, the one in the dirty trench coat who’s in love with you.” Dean averts his gaze. This is one of those flippant lines that people incorrectly assumed was never going to be cannon. Is it even considered subtext? He literally said that Castiel was in love with Dean, yet people decided to take it as a joke until 8 years later when it was made canon. Use this same lens when approaching some of the things Dean’s friends say about his sexuality.
26:17 Cas saves Dean’s life, and Dean stares at his lips again. More eye fucking.
34:41 Cas chooses to save Dean rather than get the souls he needs to win the war - proving that he cares more about Dean’s life than he does about preventing the apocalypse.
The next scene opens with My Heart Will Go On playing as Dean wakes up. Think about the lyrics of this song, the plot of the film Titanic, and how it relates to this episode. Castiel is metaphorically on a sinking ship (losing the war in Heaven). In the end of the episode he gives up the best chance he has at winning the war to save Dean’s life. In Titanic, Jack sacrifices himself to save Rose’s life after falling madly in love with her. Dean and Cas’s relationship is a romantic tragedy, like Jack and Rose. Soulmates who are always torn apart by death. It’s not a coincidence that the episode themed around a romantic film contains the first verbal confirmation of Castiel being in love with Dean.
37:33 Castiel tells them that it was all real. Dean has a very interesting facial expression when he realizes that Balthazar telling him Cas is in love with him wasn’t a dream.
Castiel says, “You’re the ones who taught me that you can make your own destiny. You don’t have to be ruled by fate. You can choose freedom.” A lot of the language in this line and this episode is mirrored in S15E18. This episode begins to explain Cas’s motives, and it foreshadows the ending of Supernatural. Everything they do from the end of Season 4 onward - altering timelines, opening portals, killing Death, etc. - is all because of Cas’s love for Dean. And the tragedy of it is that Castiel sacrifices everything for Dean, yet Dean can’t live without him and ends up dying anyway.
Dean says, “Besides, Titanic didn’t suck that bad. Winslet’s rack?” Cas vanishes. Dean says, “Well I’ll tell you one thing about Cas, he does not appreciate the finer things.” Stop making each other jealous.
Episode 18
For anyone who thinks cowboys are the peak of heteronormativity, allow me to ruin your life. It’s not an accident that Brokeback Mountain became one of the highest grossing gay films of all time. Gay people love cowboys. Part of this is due to film history, which I’ll get to in a minute, but a lot of it is due to US history. The California Gold Rush began in 1848, and thousands of men traveled out West to make their fortune. The problem was, few women wanted to join them. Women made up only 8% of the population of California at the time, and 2% of the population in mining towns (and those were mostly prostitutes). So if you wanted to get laid on the frontier, your options were to hire a prostitute, or suck it up and “Do the French mistake” (S6E15). Gay relationships were extremely common in frontier towns. They were called “bachelor marriages”, and in many cases they were socially accepted.
Cowboy movies have been considered homoerotic since they first hit the big screen. They feature attractive men alone in the wilderness together, handling phallic objects (guns), using vulgarity, drinking together, and often wrestling on the ground. Some films famous for their gay subtext include Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Wild Bunch, Red River, and Bend of the River. Just watch the gun scene from Red River - two young men fondling each other’s pistols - and you’ll see what I mean. Bonus: Compare that nose scratching gesture to S2E2 when Dean meets Ash.
5:53 Dean says, “Come on Cas, I Dream of Jeannie your ass down here.” In the TV series I Dream of Jeannie, the genie was a sexy woman who was subservient to a human man and called him Master.
6:59 After Rachel goes on a rant about how Dean and Sam use Castiel and don’t appreciate how much he does for them, Cas appears in person and tells her to go. He asks Dean, “Now what do you need?” Again comparing Castiel to Jeannie.
8:07 Dean wants to dress up as cowboys. Sam says, “You have a fetish, Dean.”
9:18 Dean says, “Alright, well, see you at high noon tomorrow - partner” and winks at Cas.
21:59 The bartender says, “New hat.” Dean nods and says, “I look good.” The bartender nods, and continues oggling Dean.
24:25 Dean gets a man to open the door by pretending to be a woman, and then they cross guns
30:38 Bobby says, “What do you want me to do, make another deal? Seal it with a kiss?” Cas says, “I need you to let me touch it.” Bobby raises his eyebrows. “Touch it?”
37:28 After shooting the phoenix, Dean blows on his gun
40:22 Cas stares up at Dean, and Dean puts his cowboy hat back on
Episode 19
4:25 Dean says, “Why’s it always gotta be me that makes the call? It’s not like Cas lives in my ass.” Cas appears directly behind him. Dean says, “Cas, get out of my ass!” Cas says, “I was never in your-“ He trails off and stares at Dean.
6:58 Lenore says, “Everyone gives in” and looks at Dean, who looks away uncomfortably. Remember, vampires and their “unholy desires” are a symbol for homosexuality in Supernatural.
8:18 Lenore asks Sam to kill her because she fed on a young girl.
10:29 Dean says, “So wait, mom’s making you limp?” Cas says, “Figuratively, yes.”
11:59 Cas tries not to look at Dean’s ass while he’s bent over picking a lock
19:39 Dean saves Cas while Cas is handcuffed up against the wall
23:03 Cas tells Dean to stay focused, but Dean insists on saving the children
24:03 Castiel stares out the window. He talks to Bobby about the boys’ “crippling empathetic response.” This scene highlights the difference between Dean and Castiel, and why Cas loves Dean. Castiel always thinks of the big picture. He can be Machiavellian, willing to do anything to achieve his goals. But Dean is all heart. The fate of the world may be hanging by a thread, but Dean is going to save those little kids no matter what. Dean’s example is what changed Cas’s heart in Season 4, and he continues to have an influence on Cas in each season. Dean literally teaches Castiel how to love.
39:29 Dean finds out that Crowley is still alive, but he refuses to believe Cas lied to them. This is another reason Cas loves Dean: Dean’s unshakeable loyalty. We’ve seen so many of Cas’s friends, family and loyal followers turn on him. Uriel, Anna, his lieutenant, even God. Dean is the only person who Cas can always trust to have his back and treat him like family.
Episode 20
6:22 Cas says, “I am holding up my end.” Crowley says, “Ah yes, but is that all you’re holding? The stench of that Impala is all over your overcoat, angel.”
8:11 Castiel is watching over Dean in secret at Lisa’s house.
12:14 “The worst part was Dean trying so hard to be loyal, with every instinct telling him otherwise.” This episode shows Castiel staring longingly at Dean’s face while invisible, both in present day and a year ago. It establishes that Cas spends a lot more time watching Dean than he tells anyone. This is reminiscent of Edward from the Twilight series watching over Bella when she sleeps. It shows Castiel longing to be with Dean, yet feeling like he needs to stay away to protect him.
19:50 Dean passionately defends Castiel’s loyalty
21:40 Cas saves Dean’s life. He says, “For a brief moment, I was me again.”
22:10 Dean says, “It’s good to see you Cas.” Cas says, “Are you alright?” Dean looks so happy and so conflicted.
23:50 Crowley says, “Come on, you think I don’t know what this is about?” … “A whore is a whore is a whore.” Cas says, “If you touch a hair on their heads, I will tear it all down.” The real reason Cas did all of this is to save Dean. He doesn’t care if he dies, if Crowley dies, if the angels lose the war, as long as Dean is okay.
25:09 Cas sees Dean in the yard raking leaves. “Watching him, I stopped. Everything he sacrificed, and I was about to ask him for more.”
25:55 Crowley says, “I’m talking about happy endings for all of us, with all possible entendres intended.” Crowley is making an innuendo to show that he knows Castiel wants to be with Dean.
27:04 Crowley says, “See, problem with the old place was most of the inmates were masochists already. A lot of, thank you sir can I have another hot spike up the jacksie?” Implying that sexual deviants go to Hell.
27:43 “Buddy boy, you’ve got what they call sex appeal.” “Thank you. Get to the point.” These are the only two canonically queer male characters. Crowley is genuinely calling Cas sexy, and Cas takes it like a queen.
32:35 Dean says, “Look me in the eye and tell me you’re not working with Crowley.” The look on Dean’s face is heartbreaking.
35:36 Dean doesn’t want to leave Cas even after he betrayed them.
37:50 Dean can’t sleep. He’s thinking about Cas. Cas appears next to Dean’s bed, again in an intimate setting in moonlight. This is the inverse of the set and lighting design of S4E2, the first time they spoke like this. This time Dean stands by the window in the light, and Cas is trying to step into the light with him. Dean has become the source of love and righteousness, and Cas is trying to come back to him. Dean asks Cas to trust him. Dean says he’ll stop Cas if he has to. Cas says, “You can’t, Dean. You’re just a man. I’m an angel.” Dean says, “I don’t know, I’ve taken some pretty big fish.” Is this an innuendo?
Castiel is praying to God. He says, “I believe it’s what you would call a tragedy, from the human perspective.” In S6E17 we established Castiel’s relationship with Dean is a romantic tragedy. But unlike Titanic - which is a modern tragedy - this episode is named “The Man Who Would Be King”, which is more of a Shakespearean tragedy. One of the elements of a Shakespearean tragedy is hamartia, the hero’s tragic flaw. Castiel’s tragic character flaw in this season was his inability to trust Dean. He wanted to keep Dean safe, but he pridefully thought of himself as much stronger and more capable than Dean - that Dean was “just a man” and needed protection. When in reality, Castiel is the one who needed Dean’s help. It’s possible that Dean, Cas, Sam and Bobby could have figured out a way to stop the apocalypse again without Crowley, if only Castiel had been able to trust them.
To understand Castiel’s choice, we have to go back to the end of Season 5. In S5E22, Dean and Cas are in the car together. Dean promised Sam that he would go to Lisa, but he didn’t seem to actually want to. Dean gave Castiel the opportunity to stay with him, but Cas wanted to give Dean a chance at a happy, normal life, and he was probably also afraid. Dean and Cas had never been alone together for long. This would be opening the door for a romantic future between them. What if Dean had agreed to go with Cas instead of Lisa? What if he’d said no, and abandoned Cas just like so many of Cas’s friends? Cas was afraid to admit that he needed Deans, afraid to admit that he was in love with him, and afraid of being rejected. So he left before he could even ask what Dean wanted, and he foolishly tried to handle everything on his own, hurting Dean in the process.
Episode 21
Lisa and Ben are kidnapped, but Dean chooses not to ask Cas for help. This is the tragic result of what we saw in the last episode: Because Castiel couldn’t trust Dean, Dean is now unable to trust Cas, breaking the bond of love between them that was once powerful enough to change fate.
21:39 Castiel comes back to save Dean
22:34 Cas says, “I do everything that you ask. I always come when you call. And I am your friend. Still, despite your lack of faith in me, and now your threats. I just saved you again. Has anyone but your closest kin ever done more for you?”
23:47 Dean rejects Cas’s offer. As Dean turns away from Cas, both of them are crying. The pain of losing the love and trust they both shared is worse than their anger in this moment.
Dean and Cas’s fight is juxtaposed to Bobby talking with Eleanor. Bobby is upset that she lied to him while they were together. Bobby offers to protect Eleanor, and she says, “Bobby, you’re just a man.” This is mirroring Castiel saying the same line to Dean in the last episode. We’re meant to draw a parallel between these two couples.
37:07 Cas heals Lisa. He says, “Dean, I said I’m sorry and I meant it.” Dean says, “Thank you. I wish this changed anything.” Cas says, “I know. So do I.” They’re both in tears again. Cas is the only person Dean is able to cry in front of freely. No matter how much Cas and Dean hurt or betray each other, they still love each other. It’s these moments when they’re fighting that you can see the love in their eyes the clearest.
39:44 Dean loses Ben and Lisa forever, yet in this scene he’s less emotional than he was when he was fighting with Castiel. Dean can live without Ben and Lisa, but he can never live without Cas.
Episode 22
8:21 Bobby finds Eleanor dying. She says, “I guess I could have used your help after all.” The only purpose of Eleanor and Bobby’s (romantic and sexual) relationship is to mirror Dean and Cas’s relationship. Eleanor mirrored Cas’s vanity by underestimating Bobby and claiming not to need his help, because he is “just a man.” Castiel did the same thing to Dean.
9:28 Eleanor saying “I’m sorry” to Bobby is immediately mirrored by Castiel saying “I’m sorry.”
Cas destroys the barrier in Sam’s mind. He does the one thing he thinks is sure to make Dean hate him, just to keep Dean alive. This brings us back to Cas’s tragic character flaw and how it destroys the thing he cares about most.
21:57 Balthazar says, “How’s Sleeping Beauty? You didn’t steal any kisses I trust?” Balthazar is on team Wincest, oh dear. I guess he just wants Cas to himself.
24:01 Crowley says to Cas, “Have you forgotten that you’re the bottom in this relationship?” If anything this establishes Cas as the top, since he just pulled one over on Crowley.
30:26 Cas kills his closest friend (and possibly former lover) rather than admit he’s the one in the wrong
38:13 Cas says, “You can’t imagine what it’s like. They’re all inside me - millions upon millions of souls.” Crowley says, “Sounds sexy.”
39:05 Dean tries to convince Cas to let go of the souls so he doesn’t die. Dean says, “We were family once. I would have died for you. … I’ve lost Lisa. I’ve lost Ben. Now I’ve lost Sam. Don’t make me lose you too.” Even after Cas betrayed Dean and hurt every one of his family members, Dean phrases it as “Don’t make me lose you too.” Dean still loves Cas and wants to be with him, even at Cas’s absolute worst. This is Dean’s reciprocal act of true love. He’s still trying to save Cas and still treating him like family, no matter how much Cas lies to him, abandons him and hurts him.
Cas responds with, “You’re just saying that because I won. Because you’re afraid. You’re not my family, Dean. I have no family.” This is how Castiel’s story ends for the season - with him repeating his tragic character flaw. Cas doesn’t trust Dean, and he doesn’t believe that Dean is capable of loving him back. No matter what Dean does - offering to help, opening up to Cas, standing up for him when nobody else will - Cas is too afraid to let Dean love him, and he chooses to run away instead. And that fear turns him into a monster.
If you can think of anything I missed from this season, please post it down in the comments and I will check it out! Note: these are all inferences, and I tried to be as thorough as possible. You’re welcome to disagree with or be dismissive of some or even all of my conclusions. The point is that, among these many excerpts, you can see a story forming about the attitude toward homosexuality/bisexuality in the Supernatural universe, and how that has impacted its characters (mostly Dean). When you notice a motif appear in a character’s story dozens or hundreds of times, it’s hard to make the argument that it’s not intentional writing. Debunking of the new "Debunking GoldenBoth document"
Now if you didn't understand the title well let me fill you in for what we'll be doing on this post: A few hours ago (I won't say the user as I don't have permission so I'll refer to them as someone) someone posted a document called, "GoldenBoth Debunking" and well in about 17 minutes from it being posted I read it all and well got to work, I made a post too (this one) debunking that document that "Debunks GoldenBoth" so well here we go. And if you don't know which one I'm talking about I recommend reading it before reading this post to understand so here's the link: https://www.reddit.com/fnaftheories/comments/l5m7iu/goldenduo_debunking_doc/ Anyways now that you have read it lets get straight into it. So here is the order too: We will debunk this documents arguments and I will share my thoughts on it at the end of the post. Then the goodbyes. Anyways enjoy :) Okay Theorists! Now this is the "debunking" of the logbook evidence here is the piece from the doc:
The first piece of evidence is the Survival Logbook. Back in 2018 when the Survival Logbook was released, before people had a second to acknowledge the Altered Text, many people believed MikeVictim. However, a new theory was born, and that was GoldenDuo. Now, mid 2020 to early 2021 (at least, I hope GoldenDuo ends that soon with this debunking doc) is when GoldenDuo is really popular. However, GoldenDuo did exist all the way back when the Survival Logbook came out, and that’s because people thought that the two spirits conversing in the logbook were Cassidy and BV. Now, I don’t know how they came to the conclusion that this has to mean Golden Freddy has two spirits, but they saw BV and Cassidy conversing in the logbook, and I guess they combined it with the fact that Cassidy and BV both have ties to Golden Freddy to be able to say that they’re both separate, but also Golden Freddy, therefore Golden Freddy has two sols, BV and Cassidy. However, first off, the logbook actually supports BV being Cassidy, not BV and Cassidy being separate. Even so, just because BV and Cassidy are both conversing in the logbook doesn’t mean that they also both have to be in Golden Freddy. In short, if the logbook truly is two spirits conversing, BV is likely Cassidy, which points to a very much hated but still pretty respectable theory called BV5th, that BV is the 5th kid in the MCI.
Ok so first off how does the logbook support the idea of BV being Cassidy? (Tell me in the comments) Now to the debunking, the reason GoldenBoth believers use the logbook to support GoldenBoth is because.....
The words "ITS ME' are scattered around the logbook which CLEARLY indicates Goldie being in the logbook. So that's already associating Goldie.
In SL we learn that merging with another consciousness lets you gain their memories. (I'm not making stuff up, Baby and Elizabeth, Andrew and Jake etc.) This would explain Cassidy knowing about BV's "purple plastic telephone" And knowing about Fred bear plush saying "does he still talk to you?". Ok now you're gonna ask, "WhAt DoEs tHiS HaS To dO WiTh AnYtHinG!? well if Cassidy is 100% confirmed to be in Goldie, and if GoldenBoth is Cassidy talking to CC then in other words its Golden Freddy(Cassidy) talking to CC through the logbook and if they had to merge to gain each others memories then it WOULD make sense for CC to be in Goldie along side Cassidy.
(That part requires imagination for it to work a bit but so does BV5TH! And if BV5TH states that its Charlie and Cassidy talking then why would Charlie ask if he (Fred bear plush) still talks to you? If BV5TH says Charlie IS Fred Bear plush. And if Charlie is talking about Mike why would Cassidy answer with a completely unrelated answer saying "I CaN HeAR SoUnDs". Ok now the second part of the doc is "debunking" GoldenBoth's "two endings", here is the piece from the doc:
The next piece of evidence people often use is the fact that Golden Freddy seems to have two endings- almost as if each of those endings go to the two souls in Golden Freddy. These endings being the Happiest Day minigame in Fnaf 3 and the Old Man Consequences minigame in Ultimate Custom Night. However, nothing says that Cassidy’s story ended right then and there in the OMC minigame- in fact, it’s implied that Happiest Day happens after Ultimate Custom Night. We already know that, due to MoltenMCI, the MCI kids are only set free after the FFPS fire, meaning Happiest Day has to happen after FFPS. Due to this, it’s highly likely that Happiest Day is after Ultimate Custom Night as well. And while it can be before Ultimate Custom Night, it’s a mere possibility, and I wouldn’t count a mere possibility as evidence.
Ok so first off whoever wrote the doc mixed up GoldenBoth and GoldenBoth's endings. GoldenBoth's endings aren't Cassidy's story being over. It's BV and Charlie's story being over. Look in happiest day Puppet confronts a CRYING CHILD (sound familiar?) and gives him his happiest day and BV and Cassidy separate from Golden Freddy. BV, the MCI kids and Charlie go to their after life. (It would make sense as to why Puppet isn't in SD and probably won't be in SB) Now if the person who wrote this doc is reading my post, GoldenBoth endings are Cassidy and BV separating with BV going to his after life but Cassidy refusing, Cassidy stays behind, (as shown in UCN.) Also whoever wrote this doc got GoldenBoth confused again as Old man consequences was never used as evidence for GoldenBoth and it never will be. OMC actually supports the idea of Cassidy wanting to stay behind, not accepting after life unlike BV. Now almost at the end of the doc, here is the next piece:
Next up, I have an odd piece of evidence that I only found the other day. It’s that, in the Thank You! poster from 2015, Golden Freddy’s two eyes look different, almost as if there are two spirits in him. However, this is clearly a lighting glitch. I know this because if it was intentional detail that Scott Cawthon wanted, it would’ve appeared in the games too. It’s also because the lighting in this picture is brighter than when Golden Freddy originally appears, which is a dark office. Even so, I don’t think we should use the Thank You! poster as evidence. This one’s also related to lighting, and it’s that Golden Freddy’s mask in the FNAF 3 Bad Ending has two different lights coming from his two different eyes, while the rest of the animatronics have one eye per mask. Now this isn’t a lighting glitch, it’s just that Golden Freddy’s eye light shines so bright that the glow goes into the other eye- we can see it happening with Bonnie too, so unless you’re suggesting Bonnie Duo, I suggest you stop using this as evidence.
Ok I'll give that one to whoever wrote the doc. It was a dumb way of using evidence which I may or may not have used but that was just speculation and a stretch. But every theory has its bit of stretching. And this may be perhaps the weakest of GoldenBoth evidence so...... Now theorists we are almost at the end of the doc with this piece from the doc:
Now the second to last piece of evidence, The New Kid. People say that Andrew and Kelsey are two souls in the same suit. However, while I agree with Andrew of course being a soul, I’ll have to disagree with Kelsey being a soul. First off, I think if Kelsey was a soul, he would have appeared in the Stitcwraith with Andrew. Next, he has a family, owns land, and is fully registered for school- ghosts can’t do that. So then, how does he come back from death? Well, it’s simple- via revival, which is an established concept throughout the series already. He’s revived by Andrew, and that’s how he survives. In short, he’s likely a real physical human.
....GoldenBoth doesn't say Kelsey is a ghost, let me just...explain this better: This could be a way of hinting that there are two people in Golden Freddy, Kelsey died in a prank just like BV (not a parallel but a hint) and Andrew who has to be Cassidy's parallel who is also shown to be in Golden Freddy. So this is already hinting how there could be 2 people in GF. Ok and finally the last piece from the doc:
Now, the final piece of evidence, one that I’ve been putting off for this entire doc, is the most used piece of evidence for GoldenDuo. As I stated earlier, while GoldenDuo origins were in 2018, 2020 is when it really blew up- and this evidence is what caused it. People are saying that Stitcwraith from Fazbear Frights parallels Golden Freddy. However, I’ll have to disagree with this for several reasons. First off, why does it parallel Golden Freddy in the first place? Well, they say that since there are two spirits in the Stitcwraith, there are two spirits in Golden Freddy- they say this because the spirits in Stitcwraith apparently match BV and Cassidy. BV is Jake because Jake is nice and died in a hospital, just like BV. And Andrew is Cassidy because Andrew is angry and vengeful, like Cassidy. I have problems with this for two reasons. First off, this just explains why the spirits in the Stitcwraith parallel BV and Cassidy, but it doesn’t say how Stitcwraith parallels Golden Freddy. And even so, I doubt BV parallels Jake anyways- Jake didn’t die in a hospital, nor is BV nice. BV is so sad all the time that he never does any nice actions- so no, BV isn’t mean, but that doesn’t mean he’s nice. Some might argue that The Real Jake supports Jake paralleling BV, but that’s a whole other can of worms I won’t get into. What I really wanna focus on today is the Blackbird Epilogue, which depicts the Stitcwraith with three souls instead of two- so saying that Golden Freddy has two souls is ignoring the fact that William Afton is also in the Stitcwraith, thus killing the parallel.
Ok I have explained this many, many times but I'm willing to say it again: The problem people have is that A. They tend to forget that Fazbear Frights and the games aren't 100% identical to each other (the appearance of Susie and how she looks should've proved this) and B. They completely look past other possibilities of having three souls could possibly mean for the series, or that using the "Fazbear Frights and Games aren't exactly the same timeline and are just similar" argument, and just say that's not canon to the games at all, to summarize, Stitch Wraith not being Goldie's parallel isn’t “debunking” GoldenBoth. Also Stitcwraith was never Goldie's parallel so its not evidence which means no evidence debunked. Also because William was also in Stitch wraith people think that it's no longer true, which isn't enough reasoning as it could also mean that there's three people inside Golden Freddy (granted that's unlikely) instead of two, or it just simply doesn't apply in the games as we know that William only becomes Spring trap, Scrap trap, and Glitch trap and we have no reason to believe he becomes anyone else in the games of course. Now Theorists that was the end of the doc! But wait there's more? Ok lets check the piece out!:
Well… that’s where you’re wrong. After doing some digging into the timeline of events under GoldenDuo and connecting it to what we know about spirits, I can safely say that GoldenDuo is impossible. I say this because of the debate as to whether Golden Freddy is a physical animatronic, or just a ghost manifesting into the form of Fred bear. While I won’t tell my side in the argument, I can safely say that GoldenDuo requires Golden Freddy to be a physical animatronic. After all, if he were a ghost, two ghosts can’t like… fuse into one ghost. So Golden Freddy has to be physical under this theory. This means that, for BV and Cassidy to possess Golden Freddy, they both have to touch Golden Freddy- as William says in The Fourth Closet, “The spirit is guided by the flesh.” So Cassidy’s case is pretty simple, Cassidy touches the suit because they were quite literally stuffed into the suit because of the MCI. However, in the background of the Night 6 cutscene in FNAF 4, we hear a flatline, meaning BV was at a hospital during his death. If this were the case, how would he touch the suit? He can’t float over to the suit, or have the “spiritual connection” that most say he does, because that’s not an established concept in the series, and they’re pulling it out of nowhere. So, can BV possess Golden Freddy if Golden Freddy is physical? No. Therefore, GoldenDuo is literally impossible because itrequiresGolden Freddy to be physical.
Wait wait wait say that part again,
He can’t float over to the suit, or have the “spiritual connection” that most say he does, because that’s not an established concept in the series, and they’re pulling it out of nowhere.
Mmm seems like someone didn't notice how Andrew practically FLOATED to Stitch wraith after the Faz Bear distribution center exploded. So when you say floating to suits isn't something established in the series maybe read Bunny Call again..... Ok another quote to debunk:
So Golden Freddy has to be physical under this theory. Therefore, GoldenDuo is literally impossible because itrequiresGolden Freddy to be physical.
No it doesn't... So the thing is GoldenBoth has 2 possibility's for it to work,
That GF is a physical animatronic:
GF is practically shown to be a physical animatronic in TTW and it would explain stage 01's Yellow Bear animatronic (that...could be Fred bear though so onto possibility 2.)
That GF is a type of Soul Armor: Golden Freddy is an apparition to mock what Fred bear looks like. And if he is a physical animatronic well explain how GF can shape-shift and teleport. In TSE Michael Brooks is using GF as a soul Armor since he also teleports like the Games version of GF. Now to put a better title, GF is a ghost and Cassidy and BV are in that ghost. Saying its a stretch? BV5TH also works like that. Think about it, if GF is 100% not a real animatronic and more of a ghost then Cassidy and BV can be in it. It also works with BV5TH with GF being a ghost and Cassidy being in that ghost. Better way of saying it? He is a ghostly projection of Fred bear. So I think we can safely say that GF isn't a physical animatronic.
And that's all! Now the person that wrote the doc also made like an outro/conclusion so here is the piece:
All in all, you’re left with some questions. “If GoldenDuo isn’t true, what theory should I believe instead?” Or maybe: “If GoldenDuo isn’t true, why did Matpat say it?” Or… “If GoldenDuo isn’t true, why is it so immensely popular?” Well, first off, other theories you can believe regarding BV are MikeVictim, BV5th, even ShadowVictim, though being terrible as well, is a better pick than GoldenDuo. This doc is about GoldenDuo though, so I won’t get into those theories too much. Next about MatPat… he doesn’t make good theories. Yes, Scott used one of his videos to debunk Miketrap and confirm Will Trap, but that doesn’t mean he’s the best. Especially considering that was back in 2017, when MatPat was somewhat good- even then, he had created MikeBot in that same video. Nowadays, his theories are just garbage. Scott hasn’t said anything to MatPat in years regarding the lore because of it. Don’t blindly trust/follow anyone unless their claims can’t be challenged. Finally, GoldenDuo is likely popular for two reasons. One, it’s a simple answer, and the community is all about simple answers. Two, MatPat said it, and judging from his gargantuan following, he obviously had a massive effect on the community. Now, I’m not good at ending professional long docs like this, so I’ll just abruptly end it right he
.........Ok, this section won't be debunking but it will be on my opinions:
All in all, you’re left with some questions. “If GoldenDuo isn’t true, what theory should I believe instead?”
Well first off GoldenBoth and every fnaf theory that has been made are well theories, they're not confirmed but if you're talking that GoldenBoth is dead? Oh no I don't think so.
Or… “If GoldenDuo isn’t true, why is it so immensely popular?”
GoldenBoth isn't "immensely" popular, its just a theory that some people like and some people don't like.
Well, first off, other theories you can believe regarding BV are MikeVictim, BV5th, even ShadowVictim, though being terrible as well, is a better pick than GoldenDuo.
Ok well honestly in my opinion even if you don't agree with a theory or something you still have to respect it, its what other people think and most importantly you can't treat a theory like a fact unless it's been confirmed.
he had created MikeBot
I believed that theory for a while not gonna lie.
Finally, GoldenDuo is likely popular for two reasons. One, it’s a simple answer, and the community is all about simple answers. Two, MatPat said it, and judging from his gargantuan following, he obviously had a massive effect on the community.
So for me, GoldenBoth is just another way of trying to explain BV, Cassidy and GF and even before Mat Pat made his video on it, I was already believing the theory.
Now, I’m not good at ending professional long docs like this, so I’ll just abruptly end it right here
Wow I didn't know we had something in common! So there you go, I know I should've written this in a comment or something but once the doc came out I had to check it out and well I gave my debunking's. Now you don't have to agree with me because you can't change someone else's beliefs' but hey if you're asking, "Why are you defending this theory again?" well because 1. I'm bored and 2. I'm GoldenBoth. Anyways hopefully you enjoyed and bye :)

Overall
Favorite LI
Annabelle, because the story set in a period time where same sex relationship was considered as taboo, her love for MC is so strong. Her personality is amazing too.
Aster, because she's such a cinnamon roll and if anything happens to her I would kill everybody in this room and then myself
ava cunningham, because witches are neat
Becca Davenport. I love how fierce she is, and how you can tell she's just as into you as you are to her- even in the first few books where she's an antagonist. Plus, her whole rebirth character arc is absolute gold.
Bryce Lahela (OH), simply because character growth. Always optimistic, always wanting to do good and help other people. I'm so happy they developed his backstory, it's been great watching him step up as an older brother and be vulnerable with mc. He feels like a well rounded character with an actual personality.
Charlie Smith, because she is so much more developed than other female love interests. She was beautiful and had an amazing personality. Her backstory was incredible and if you choose to romance her, it felt clear that you were more than friends, unlike a lot of other LI's where it only seems like you're romancing them during diamond scenes.
Dallas from Big Sky Country. This is a VERY tough question to answer, because there are so many LIs that I love, but I'm picking Dallas because I love his personality. He's pretty reserved and even seems a little shy at times, and I'm a sucker for the "cold guy is actually a cute lil teddy bear once he opens up to you" trope.
Damien because his arc is really well-developed over the books! You get to see him grow and watch him open himself to you and let you help him heal. It's beautiful. Plus, who doesn't love a typical softie with a hard exterior? No lie, his 'sir' kink is what made him the real winner here. It's one of the few moments where PB plays to kinks like that and does it well.
Ethan Ramsey. Firstly I am a sucker for a good old slow burn. Secondly I like Ethan's character. Yes I know that he may be annoying in a bad way because after all, he is stubborn, pessimistic and wilful but he shows his weaknesses when he is with the person he truly loves. As a doctor, he cares for everyone and treats all equally
Jackie. She's a very well-rounded character. She has her flaws but she's also still a strong and good person. She's not afraid to call the MC out on something stupid or something she believes is stupid even when they're her LI. I love LIs that don't worship the MC and feel like actual partners.
Kamillah. Her confidence is extremely attractive but I also like how the MC reawakens or at least helps rediscover Kamillah's ability to love. She also says the sweetest things
Kinglsey because the drama
Liam, I guess? No LI sticks out as a favorite but he's pretty decent. I like his gentle personality.
Mal, because I get to fuck him
Maria from HSS. I like driven hardworking, more serious women.
Maxwell, because his relationship with MC is so organic. He’s who I would actually want to come home to. There’s such tenderness and laughter.
Poppy, because that's my type and I'm a clown
Rafael, because I enjoy the fact that he’s not perfect but he’s also extremely sweet and caring. He’s always there for MC, and so many other people, and despite being paywalled has an interesting story.
Sonia Alves, the 'catch me if you can' feeling between her and MC was delicious
Skye, because her and MC are just so god damn adorable. I feel like no matter what happens, they'll always have each others back. It's disgustingly cute.
Syphax; He is the only character in ACoR MC's life who truly knows all sides of her, and accepts and supports her so much that he'd give his life to help her fulfill her dreams.
Thomas, (MOTY) because I love me my hot lawyer man 😂 but fr he's a strong, kind, hardworking single dad who tries his best. Totally stole my heart.
Tyril is probably my most favorite and it's most likely the recency bias talking tbh. I blame the writers for making him similar to Zuko from The Last Airbender TV show because he was my favorite character on there too lol.
Zoey is an awesome bestie and partner in crime. She’s responsible for our rise to the top. She’s the only person who’s been there since day one, always rooting for us. She’s just a rockstar all around.
Too many LIs to choose. Tough poly life.
Least Favorite LI
Adam, in AME, he had no backbone or personality
Ahmed because no professional athlete can have that lack of work ethic, whininess, and honestly still be employed by their club/team
Beckett, he’s sweet and I liked him but he looks like my brother and it scares me.
beckett, go away i don’t like you
Cassian because this dumb bitch has no backbone
Clint, the spineless mf
Drake Walker; i am begging drake stans to have higher standards and to love yourself more😘
Edward from DS, the guy was incredibly dull, he had no personality whatsoever and every scene with him just made me want to sleep.
Elliot from Passport. Lmaooo, he was such a non-entity.
Ethan from OH, this guy ruined OH2 with his constant appearance everywhere. In every episode he got a freaking diamond scene, those who were not romancing him got sick and tired of his constant issues and problems. No, I don't care about your dad, mom, pet, internet profile or your constant needs. Just go away.
Hayden, because I couldn't bear the thought of dating a robot.
Ian queen bee. If you’re trying not to romance him it’s really creepy how he keeps blowing up your phone and ignoring boundaries when he has a position of power.
Mark Collins, how annoying can one guy be? Answer: this much.
maxwell because i thought of him as a brother
Nia because I felt she wasn't made to be a LI from the start, too pure and too innocent.
Poppy if she counts because that relationship is straight toxic.
Sam!!! he is incredibly forced has never heard of boundaries and doesn't even pretend to be professional
ROE LI(s), bland with no personality except loving MC
All of the LI in home for the holidays because they were all boring
LI You Came to Like/Dislike
Becca, because in the beginning of the first book I reeeaaally hated her, and then...
Beckett because he kept getting shoved in my face
Bryce Lahela - strongest case of initial neutrality / not noticing him to suddenly, not deliberately, falling for someone deeper and deeper and being unable to do anything about it
The cowboy LI in Big Sky Country. I started the book not wanting to like him but he ended up being a great LI
Damien. Didn’t like him as a LI at first. But started to when he was chopping wood at the undercover house.
drake walker. i used to be neutral about him but i grew to dislike/hate him bc he mooches of liam whilst complaining about the same system that lets him live a life of luxury. he’s just a privileged white dude who’s so self unaware it’s painful.
Ethan, I kinda lost the spark after the hiatus.
Elliot. His whining made me stop play to PTR at chapter 12.
James from TFS. At the very beginning, he seemed very mature and sweet, but as you moved through book 2 and 3, he was constantly hostile toward MC when the situation was out of her hands/she wanted him to do what was best for himself; It put me off.
Kaitlyn annoyed me as the books progressed. I eventually dumped her for Becca.
Kamilah, I didn't like her energy first but later on had her as main LI.
I used to hate **Lily, but turns out she is actually pretty funny and stress-relieving.
Marc Antony, I disliked him at first but he grew on me because his character was very interesting and his life didn't revolve around MC.
** Mason Jennings**: I disliked him at first because he was pushy and indecisive, but in the latest chapters as we learned more about him, I came to like him.
Maxwell Beaumont; I never disliked him. On the contrary, I liked him a lot, but I did always see him as a friend at first. I finished his route last, and now I can't go back to the others after seeing what a special connection he and the MC have. They bounce off each other and complement each other so well!
Poppy, hated her at first -> now I like her (rich and bitchy is my type :D)
The professor from Queen B. First I felt bad for them cause MC wouldnt take a hint and kept bothering them, but then near the end it flips and they keep butting in on MC's life and wouldnt leave them alone. Bitch have fun at the conference that might end your career next book. Ima be there to tell them you serve to be fired for harassment -_-
Raf from OH only because I thought he was leaving. And then thought he was dying. So I was romancing him and Jackie but starting pursuing Jackie more. If I knew how it would turn out I would have stayed with Raf seriously. It’s one of the few books where I’ve had multiple LIs.
Seth: really liked him in RCD 1, he was down-to-earth and funny and I liked that you could help with his self-esteem. In the second book something changed, probably because of his new job with Teja. He came off really annoying at that point
Approach
On a scale from 1-5, on how would you describe your approach towards going after LIs in stories, with 1 being "chaste" and 5 being "thirsty", the average across all answers was 3.46. (lower than last year!)
Multiple LIs
On a scale from 1-5, on how would you describe your attitude towards going after multiple LIs, with 1 being "monoamory" and 5 being "polyamory", the average across all answers was 2.63. (slightly higher than last year)
Most Wanted Non-official LI
The majority of suggestions here are female characters, possibly as a reflection of the relative dearth of female LIs. As last year, the top character was again Olivia at 218 mentions. Following her were Aurora (167), Sienna (116), and Poppy (114)
Aerin, because I’m that stupid.
Prince Aerin, my MC wasn't happy with just the sexy night elf and the s t r o n k badass orc
Alma (mother of the year), but only if she was single - I hate being a homewrecker.
Aurora, because we could of had a enemies to friends to lovers moment like what’s stopping you pb?!
Probably Ava. (Mtfl jab, sorry I couldn't resist)
Bertrand because it sounds funny and I need it
Bug monster from blades because damn that would be interesting.
Carter from Queen B, I can't imagine how bothered Poppy would be by that, and I would love to see her reaction.
Cecile (Perfect Match), my lawd what a babe. Redhead villainess, yes please.
ERIN, from HSS CA, I was bummed out when I found out she wasnt a LI
…Gaius or Aerin because I’m a damned clown
Leo from royal romance because he's hot
Marinara sauce
Michelle, because she’s smart and could kill a bitch. What a woman 🥰
Naveen 😈 nah i’m just kidding idk
Oliver from Distant Shores. He was “allegedly” an LI, but it didn’t feel like it.
Olivia - she’s a bad bitch
poppy (qb) her chemistry with mc was written so well, the whole hate-romance dynamic really came through and i loved it. i'd love to see if she gets a redemption arc

Most CHIKARA guys tended to wrestler under unique CHIKARA gimmicks while there while still wrestling as a more "traditional" gimmick in some other indies. Curious if anyone could add to this list I've accumulated over the years. some of these are obvious as they were revealed via storyline, but people who havent watched CHIKARA might not be able to tell that just from results. Also, its worth mentioning a lot of CHIKARA gimmicks have been used by many different wrestlers randomly. For example Los Ice Creams and Swamp Monster were probably dozens of different people. Basically think if a gimmick / costume had not just a mask, but the majority of the body covered, then anyone could realistically be under the hood. For example, Icarus did wrestle as Estonian Thunderfrog a few times in the various "Wrestling Is..." shows. To keep ring rust off. The gimmick did however finally seem to settle on one person who still uses it today. 17 (I) = Kyle Matthews 17 (II) = Ophidan Amasis = Desean Pratt Archibald Peck = RD Evans Arctic Rescue Ant = Jixx Argus = Ryan Zane Ashley Remmington = Dalton Castle assailANT = Zito BLANK = Logan Easton LaRoux Blaster McMassive = Thomas Sharp Bullet Ant = Jixx Carpenter Ant = Pinkie Sanchez Chiva Kid = Andrew Everett combatANT = Alex Reynolds Create-A-Wrestler = A Very Good Professional Wrestler Danjerhawk = Mach10 Darkness Crabtree = Mike Quackenbush Dasher Hatfield = A Very Good Professional Wrestler Deaucalion = Chainsaw King deviANT = Isaias Velazquez Donald Kluger = Rob Locke Dr. Cube (II) = Jakob Hammermeier Dragon Dragon = Various, Eddie Kingston El Hijo del Ice Cream = Mike Quackenbush, Various Equinox (I) = Vin Gerard Equinox (II) = Jimmy Olsen Equinox (III) = Ace Haven Flex Rumblecrunch = Sean Burke Fire Ant = Orange Cassidy Green Ant (I) = Lince Dorado (only appeared at ringside, never wrestled) Green Ant (II) = Kazuhiko Miyakami Green Ant (III) = Tracy Williams Helios = Ricochet Hieracon = Jonathan Gresham Hydra (I) = Orange Cassidy (only appeared once) Hydra (II) = Leslie Butterscotch Hype Rockwell = CA Elliot Ice Cream Jr. = Hallowicked, Chuck Taylor, Various Ichabod Slayne = Icarus Jasper Tippins = Joe Keys Jervis Cottonbelly (I) = TJ Cain Jervis Cottonbelly (II) = Hallowicked Jervis Cottonbelly (III) = Kevin Condron (AKA Gentleman Jervis) Kid Cyclone = Kevin Condron Kodama = Louie Valle Lance Steel (I) = Hallowicked Lance Steel (II) = Niles Young Lithuanian Snow Troll = Alexander Bird Mano Metalico = DJ Hyde Max Smashmaster = Sebastian Reese Merlok = Havoc Milo Schnitzler = Pat Mathews Missile Assault Ant = Victor Vanek Mr. Azerbaijan = Chuck Taylor Moscow The Communist Bovine = A Very Good Professional Wrestler Nokken = TJ Marconi Nytehawk = Mike Quackenbush Obariyon = Chris Peaks One-Eyed Jack = Victor Benjamin Orbit Adventure Ant = Chuck Taylor Polar Baron = Jakob Hammermeier Prakash Sabar = Officer Bruno Meloni Qefka The Quiet = Daniel Yost Race Jaxon = Logan Easton LaRoux Razerhawk = Razerwyng Red Queen = Lady Frost Retail Dragon = Lucky 13 Rick Roland = Rex Lawless Rock Lobster = Smiley Saturyne = Hania The Howling Huntress Silver Ant = Tracy Williams Slaash = Various, Pinkie Sanchez Sloan Caprice = Mike Verna Soldier Ant = Drew Gulak Swamp Monster = Various, Pete Dunne, Daffney, Dolph Ziggler Sylverhawk = Wheeler YUTA The Latvian Proud Oak = RD Evans The Mysterious & Handsom Stranger = RD Evans The Shard = John Silver Ultimo Breakfast = A Very Good Professional Wrestler Ursa Minor in the Night Sky = Jixx Very Mysterious Ice Cream = Claudio Castagnoli Volgar = Lucas Calhoun Vokoder (I) = Sami Callihan (was supposed to be Vokoder but never actually appeared) Vokoder (II) = Tim Donst Wani = Kai Katana / Kyler Khan Worker Ant (I) = Slacker Martin Worker Ant (II) = Zito

[Supernatural Fandom] Rise of the Supernatural Fandom
So, Supernatural is halfway through its final season. I thought this was a good time for a retrospective of the early days of the fandom. My personal relationship with this drama is basically non-existent. I did not watch Supernatural until 2013ish, and I'm an extremely casual fan who'll catch up with the show every few years when suitably bored. I've never been part of the online fandom. Major spoilers for the first four seasons of Supernatural, vague spoilers for later seasons. Season 1: a fandom is born So, what is Supernatural about? According to the first press release on the show:
Gilmore Girls' breakout star Jared Padalecki and Smallville's Jensen Ackles are Sam and Dean Winchester; two young brothers bound by tragedy and blood to a dangerous, "other-worldly" mission. Crisscrossing the country in their '69 Chevy Impala, they carry on their missing father's quest to seek out and silence the supernatural forces responsible for their mother's murder twenty years ago.
Basically, it's a mostly episodic monster of the week show following two monster-hunting brothers, with a larger myth arc that ties things together. It airs on CW, a network famous for soapy teen drama/action shows, but Supernatural, a buddy cop/horror show, falls outside the network's usual purview. (EDIT: It started on the WB, which transformed into the CW during Season 2.) Supernatural began airing in 2005, with one season a year since. The show made the smart decision to mirror real time, so fifteen years have also passed in-universe, and the less-smart decision to have many characters who canonly don't age. Whoops. The early layout of the fandom was mostly Dean girls and Sam girls. With, um, shippers in the middle. Most of the fandom was on centered on Livejournal, and a collection of different forums devoted to the show. (Livejournal used to be one of the internet hotspots for fandoms. Basically tumblr before tumblr.) Before diving in, I want to quickly reiterate that this was back in 2005, so fandom culture in general was quite different. And, generally speaking, the more volatile parts of any fandom are a vocal minority. The first Dean fanclubs started before the show even aired, by fans of his actor who followed him here. These early fanclubs seemed equally as interested in the actors as they were the characters.
Fan A: yay! Jensen gets his own show! that's great! Can't wait for it to begin. Fan B: I love Jensen. He's not only very cute but he's also a great actor Fan C: The pilot is great, and i'm sure you'll love Jensen even more when you see it I hope the show does well too!
The first fanclubs for Sam were significantly less enthusiastic, but don't worry, it picks up steam once the show starts. Most of the talk is about how the actor for Sam played a character confusingly named Dean in the past, who they were not the biggest fans of.
Fan A: I love Jared. He's very hot. I've seen him in Gilmore Girls, New York Minute, and House of Wax. I can't wait to add Supernatural to my list. Fan B: Theres a Dean on the show but it's not Jared? Confusing. Fan C: i never liked Dean either, which is why Im really hoping Sam is a more intriguing character. The Pilot didnt give me such high hopes, but I think the show will build on his character and make him good to watch. I saw him in HOW and i thought his HOW character was too much like Dean too, so i hope they make Sam different.
By the time the show started airing, on one of the boards I'm referencing there were already threads about fanfiction, forum games, news threads, and so on. There are references to similar set ups over on Livejournal and other boards. As Season 1 airs, the fanbase grows. And with it comes the "Wincest." As in, shipping the two brothers together. In modern fan-speak, "shipping" is short for "relationshipping" aka, wanting two characters to be in a romantic relationship together. However, during 2005, shipping two male characters together was called "slash" or "slashing" due to conventions established in the Kirk/Spock fandom many years prior. This usage has dropped off in modern times, probably as it has become much more normalized to ship gay pairings in the broader zeitgeist, but you'll see it quoted a few times in this write-up. That Wincest became so popular was probably inevitable. Dean and Sam were the only actual characters for a very long time, their relationship is the heart and soul of the show, and, well, fandoms like to ship. From what I can see of the early fandom, surprisingly few people were squicked by the incest factor, but it might just be that online Supernatural fan-spaces self-selected for that back then. Even knowing that, personally I still have trouble seeing the appeal, so here's a Wincest fan describing why the incest doesn't drive them away in their own words:
I've never read incest slash before. Ever. I think the reason I can read this pairing is because I can wrap my mind around the idea that Dean and Sam have never lived within the boundaries of our society, and they're SO freakin' alone. They only have each other, and it makes sense to me that in time (in the hands of the right writer) that could have a sexual component added to it.
Of the first eight fanfiction posted on Fanfiction.Net, three were Wincest. During this time, three Livejournals were started related to Supernatural fanfiction. Two of them were mostly Wincest, the third was devoted to it. Looking back at the Supernatural fandom newsletters on Livejournal, about half of the fanfics written during the early seasons were Wincest, and most of the rest were devoted to the platonic relationship between the brothers. Note that while I say Wincest, the fandom spent just as much, if not more, time devoted to shipping the two men who play Sam and Dean. u/idknewaccount did a wonderful write-up of RPF, or Real People Fiction in the Supernatural Fandom here. Basically, in the early Supernatural fandom the only stars were two hot guys who were brothers. Fans who weren't comfortable with incest, but still wanted slash, started shipping the stars of the show together instead. Oftentimes the two different ships occupied the same spaces, and fans would simultaneously ship both. (*)
Fan A: --- good to have you with us! Please make all the slashy banners your heart desires. The Padackles [Ship name for the actors of Sam and Dean] hump! Do they not beg to be slashed? Seriously now, it's pics like that that put all of our minds in the gutter. We're only human! Fan B: You know I'll live on this thread, ---. Will make some when I'm off from work. I know right?! And remember Jensen's hand always always land on Jared's chest! we just answer to the calling. Fan A: I think I'll be spending all er most er some of my time in here too! we should set up tents...make it a slumber party! The chest moments sigh How I miss those. ...lately we haven't been getting them. ...but the best one EVER was the double chest pat from the 'day in the life' OMG that killed me! The way they were looking at eachother...plus the chest touching.
Banners and icons were made. (*) The fandom continues to develop naturally throughout the first season. The fandom is most active on Livejournal, where we can see the various pursuits of the fandom through their weekly, then daily newsletters, which documented and distributed fanfiction, episode reviews, fan art, fan videos, news, and meta analysis (*). Full disclosure, I relied on these newsletters a ton when doing this research. Here's a Livejournal fandom guide written in February 2006 when season one was airing, and last updated during season two, where you can see all the Supernatural communities active during the this time on Livejournal (*). Fans discussing their hopes for Season 2:
Fan A: if john [Sam and Dean's dad] comes back he needs to do that for both and say 'hey...sorry i yelled at you for not killing me.' because yeah that scene in devils trap is pretty ridiculous. john seriously yelling at sam for not killing him? are you KIDDING ME? although that did get the whole "some things are more important" look from sam when he looks at dean in the back seat, which was good. i do really want to see sam showing how much he loves his brother too and fighting things off. although i love protective!dean too Fan B: ^ yeah! protective Dean is great but i think we need more on Sam to show some protectiveness towards Dean. it's about time. some and some it'll be so sweet. ....and more shirtless Wincest can't get them out of my head. the intensity is so hot and its beyond the highest level. Fan C: I would not have a problem with that at all. I'd love to see protective Sammy!! We don't get it enough. Fan D: More humourous episodes like Hell House. Seriously lightened up season 1 after the angst fest that was Shadow. SHIRTLESSNESS! I'm shallow yes I know but the boys are smoking! Fan E: Oh yes! Shirtlessnaess is always a good thing! I'd love to see more of that Also, more awww... brother moments, more protective!Sammy, i'd love to see Dean vulnerable for awhile jsut to have Sammy take care of him
In summery, the earliest start of the Supernatural fandom was completely devoted to Sam, Dean, and their relationship. Fans loved them together, whether platonically or romantically, and could not wait to get more of the same. However, there was one small thing the fans despised. Cassie. A minor character who appeared in only one episode in all of Supernatural, Cassie was an ex girlfriend of Dean's who he left to keep safe. Unlike the other Girls of the Week, Dean actually had feelings for Cassie. The reaction was, well. (*)
Fan A: Cassie's such a horrible person for making us hate an episode like that. Fan B: Exactly, selfish bitch now we can not enjoy that episode cause she blocks the view totally with her existence. Fan C: yup, how can one person just totally ruin an episode like that? guh, I hate her Fan B: I can't believe we had to suffer through her once, if we have to agian I may cry or break my tv, and I really can't afford a new one right now.
Yeah, let's just say she wasn't very popular. Despite the hate threads running for nearly four years after her appearance, she remained a one-off character. The only reoccurring female character, Meg, also got some hate when her character was first announced, before she was revealed to be a villain (*). Fans loved the relationship between the brothers, and they loved that the show was only about that, with no other reoccurring characters (aside from a few appearances from their missing father.) They did not want anyone else coming in and stealing screen time from their boys, especially not a female character. And anything or anyone that threatened to get in between the brothers? Kill it with fire. As I'm sure you can guess, a show cannot last fifteen seasons on only two characters, and the fanbase was about to face the first real challenge to their beloved formula. Season 2: More than two characters?!!??!!??! How dare they When Season 2 finally aired, tragedy struck! Something terrible no one could have predicted was introduced to the show!! A supporting cast. Even worse, female supporting cast members. Cue Kill Bill sirens. Season 2 introduced the Roadhouse, a Hunter-run bar where the brothers could regroup and pick up cases. The bar was run by two female characters, Ellen Harvelle and her daughter Jo. Horror of all horrors, Jo had romantic chemistry with Dean, and it seemed as if the show was setting them up to be in a relationship. Now, I do feel some sympathy for the fans. Supernatural airs on CW, a network infamous for romantic subplots hijacking shows originally about more interesting things. I would be mad if a show I liked with no romance was overtaken by it at the expense of everything else, and it was probably a legitimate concern with Supernatural. That being said... (*) The backlash was severe. Hate-clubs sprung up on Supernatural fan-spaces across the net, and everything about Jo was harshly criticized. Only two of the above images come from the Jo hate threads, which were hundreds of pages of bashing Jo and wishing her character dead, the rest are from episode discussions. Ellen, too, was hated but not quite as much so. Not everyone hated Jo, and there was even a small but stable Dean/Jo shipping community, but the hatred was viscous and drowned out the affection by a large margin. The result was, as one fan puts it:
Eric [Eric Kripke, Supernatural creator and seasons 1-5 show runner] is my hero! ...latest quote from Eric in from the TV guide interview posted in the news thread... "While we're on the subject of the roadhouse characters, and of any potential romance with them, I do want to say to all the fans: Don't worry. We read the boards, we pay attention, and we take your concerns seriously. As I've said before, we gotta keep trying new things, but we're not going to pursue anything on the show that's not working" Let's take a minute to Squee over that! now let's ponder .... Reads the message boards..knows what we want...then why aren't we getting any wincest?!
The intense fan reaction led to any romantic plotline between Jo and Dean being cut, and the Roadhouse was written out of the show by the end of Season 2. So, Season 2 introducing a romantic subplot was a dead end. The fanbase threw such a revolt that Jo was completely written off the show, only brought back for a single episode in Season 5 just to be killed off. The fans had made it clear what they wanted of Supernatural: Sam and Dean and NO ONE ELSE. Parental figures or villains were acceptable to an extent, but anyone beyond that would be attacked relative to how much the fans believed they would come between the brothers. A romantic plotline that will "threaten" the brotherly lovefest? Completely unacceptable. And, the show runner not only heard them, but bowed to their demands in the face of the backlash. The evil was defeated, the female characters were no more. The fandom rejoiced. ...Until Season 3 introduced two new female characters. Season 3: So, no lessons were learned In the pre-release for Season 3 it was announced that there would be two new reoccurring female characters in Ruby, a demon who fights other demons, and Bela, a thief with a complicated past. Adding insult to injury, Ruby was advertised to fans as a hunter more skilled than the brothers. I think you guys already know how this will go. Even before Season 3 started airing, the fans were down on the new characters.
Fan A: Right now, I just like the idea of the two of them being antagonists...I still kinda wish Ruby was older, since she is suppose to be "better" than Sam and Dean and experience usually goes handin hand with age. Yet, maybe they'll turn out to be cooler than expected, I mean, after the writers stop trying to pair Dean/Jo, her character became alot better. Fan B: Ugh. Cassidy opens her mouth and I cringe. I love the sound of Bela but they both look like Barbie dolls in the pictures that were provided, and now Cassidy says Ruby is going to travel with the guys? Why the hell would she travel with them if she's supposed to be an antagonist? Fan C: Bella: Maybe, we'll see. Ruby: Bah. As much as I disliked Jo, she's looking better and better compared to THIS option. Fan D: It's strange to me to be getting season 3 tidbits and interviews--and a good percentage of it NOT be focused on Sam and Dean. I know it's the CW's goal to pimp these girls, but it rankles. That said, Bela still sounds somewhat promising. I won't comment on Ruby, who will now, apparently, sometimes be traveling with them. twitch
(*) After the first episode of the new season aired:
Fan A: I hate that they're making the girls seem all superior and shit. And I'm not even one of those people against chicks on the show. Fan B: no, i'm with you. i thought that was kind of bullshit. Fan C: I'm all for girls on the show, as long as it doesn't distract from the core of Sam and Dean. I'd actually like it if a really cool girl came in for a minor role. We'll see how this new chick works out. I just wish they didn't all have to be the perfect, blonde bombshells.
So, while there was some uproar when the characters were first announced, and a general sense of trepidation, some fans were willing to give them a chance as long as they remained minor characters. But then... Ruby had romantic tension with Sam, and Bela with Dean. Kill Bill sirens. Ruby (*)
Demons are demons. She has no right to be hanging around our boys like she's some elite part of the demon population. Grr! What the hell makes her so special? Sam should have sent her straight back to hell the moment she flashed her skanky black eyes at him. Evil barbie witch bitch!!
They even wrote some poetry about how much they hate her! Behold: (*) Bela (*)
I am so there with you about shipping Dean with Bela WTF!!! are they kidding? that is the most ridiculous thing ever, its absolutely no match there and just plain gross I really hope that bitch die or just go far away!!!
Bela was killed off in a traumatic way at the end of Season 3, and Ruby was revealed to be a villain all along and killed in a moment of catharsis for her hatedom in Season 4.
Kripke admitted that he did away with the character [Bela] partially due to the fans' hatred of her, and also said he regretted how the writers integrated her into the series. (*)
Now, there are some reoccurring characters in the first three seasons that were not attacked by fans. Jess, Sam's dead girlfriend, and Meg, who was strictly antagonistic, did not get that much hate. As one fan says:
Ah, Meg. Surprisingly, not someone I absolutely loathed - sure, she was an evil demon bitch, but I could appreciate her upfront evilness, whereas others like Ruby and Bela should just be nuked off the face of the earth.
Male characters were almost always left alone. The problem seemed to be with female characters that were perceived as threats to the current brotherly dynamic. Fans did not completely turn on Bela and Ruby until they realized that they were meant to be romantic interests for the brothers. Originally, according to apocryphic sources, Season 3 was supposed to end with Sam, traumatized by being in the Trickster's Groundhog Day loop for a year, going full darkside in order to save Dean from Hell. (That sentence makes perfect sense in context.) However, the 2007 writers strike (*) ruined their plans, and Season 3 ended with the characters in a completely hopeless situation. So, in order to get themselves out of that messy cliffhanger, in Season 4 they ended up introducing an element of the mythology which would come to define the show. Season 4: The End of the Beginning The first episode of Season 4, Lazarus Rising, aired on September 18th, 2008. And the fandom would never be the same. For anyone who knows anything about Supernatural, really anyone who has glanced at tumblr anytime in the last decade, this was a foregone conclusion. The monster at the end of this write-up, so to say. Castiel was introduced. Castiel was an angel who claimed to be one of the good guys. He was also played by a handsome actor, and had an interesting rapport with Dean. The fanbase was intrigued. (*) For the first time, the Supernatural fans embraced a character other than the Winchester boys (or their father figure Bobby). And, after a single episode, the first Dean/Castiel-- eventually dubbed Destiel-- devoted Livejournal was started (*). The first two fanfiction was written within a few days(**). You can check the comment section to see fans discussing their hopes for Dean and Castiel's relationship. As one fan predicts:
This was -- well, lovely, but totally sad! (I like. g) Now I shall mull on the fic where a) there is a Sam-Dean-Castiel threesome and the fic where Sam and Castiel fight for Dean (with sex, naturally). I rather believe you are the first of quite the long succession of fics coming down the pipeline. rubs hands Way to set a standard!
Fans latched on to the ship, hungry for something that wasn't incest, or, um, something to compliment their incest. (*) The contrast with his reception and that of most other characters in the fandom was so obvious that when his actor was interviewed after the first episode by TVAddict it was brought up:
As Castiel ... Misha Collins managed to do the impossible: sweep the fiercely protective Winchester Fangirls off their feet. Which is exactly what I congratulated him on when I had the opportunity to chat with the actor over the phone yesterday. A: I believe congratulations are in order. Your appearance on Thursday’s Supernatural season premiere left quite the impression on the fandom. MC: Really? I thought this was par for the course. A: Far from it. [Just ask Katie Cassidy [Ruby] and Lauren Cohan [Bela]]
Disgruntled Wincest shippers, or just fans of keeping the show devoted to the two brothers, had more complicated feelings about Castiel and Destiel. (*) Some even put up a fight: (*)
Im just so frustrated that this character is still here. Hopefully he leaves in Season 7. I felt this angel/heaven SL went on a lot longer than it should have. And I will never understand the Cas worship this fandom has Season 1-3 are golden because thats when it was just about Sam and Dean. Hopefully next season brings that back. [Written at the start of Season 6]
It was in vain. Castiel became a regular, and remains on the show to this day. Supernatural went from having two permanent main characters to three. And, while still platonic, Dean and Castiel's relationship takes up the screen time and emotional energy that the fandom once feared a romance would. And, the fandom changed with it. The main Livejournal center for the Supernatural fandom, the daily newsletter, divided fanfiction into five categories: Wincest, Other Slash, Het, Gen, and RPF. Soon, more Destiel fiction was being written than Wincest, but the newsletter refused to give them their own category, so the Destiel fans split with the rest of the fandom and started their own newsletter. This was the first ship war in Supernatural, the first major divide in the fandom. Today, Destiel is arguably the most popular ship, not just in Supernatural, but in all of fandom. It has the most fanfiction on AO3, the largest fanfiction archive in the English speaking web, with 88000 fics. (Wincest has 29000.) About 40% of Supernatural fanfiction is tagged "Destiel." It's won multiple "best couple" online contests against other shipping giants. For a few years at least half of tumblr was solely devoted to it. It's Big. Very Big. In the modern Supernatural fandom, from what I can see of the iceberg, most fans dislike Wincest. Because, ya'know. It's incest. Fans who joined after Season 4 started never had a reason to learn to tolerate it, because it was no longer ubiquitous in the fandom and it was no longer the only ship possible, so the fandom slowly became less inviting to the Wincest shippers. The ship never went away, but it became a minority. And, slowly, the cast started to grow. Seasons 4 and 5 introduced a lot of characters that remained major reoccurring characters besides Castiel. A fair number are still around in Season 15, over ten years later. The show still has a tendency of needlessly killing characters, but it's no longer a two-man show. On a broader scale, Season 4 changed the story from a monster of the week mostly episodic romp to an epic show about preventing the Apocalypse, with a large cast and a complex myth arc that is relevant in almost every episode. The heart of the show is still the relationship between the two brothers, but they now have more people to play off of, (and the actors are happier, because they have more time to spend with their growing families when there are other characters to carry scenes.) Supernatural would never really be the same again, with the greater focus on myth arcs and expanded cast, the formula the fans fought for was irreversibly altered. But the kicker is-- Castiel was only meant to last a few episodes. He was supposed to be killed off early on, not become a main character. It was the fandom's love for him that saved him (and gave his actor a steady paycheck for the next decade.) The same fandom that doomed every character who so much as looked at the brothers in earlier seasons. Funny thing, ain't it. Over the Years By the way, I do not want to leave you with the impression fans stopped attacking every female character after the start of Season 4. They did not. Even with the insular nature of the show broken, Ruby hate was stronger than ever, Anna got a share, as did Lisa, and many others. (*) The change did happen, but it was very gradual. The first female character who broke the mold and was truly accepted and loved by fans was Charlie, who was a nerdy lesbian, introduced in season 7. The way the fandom interacted with these characters changed, as more fans became concerned about things like Supernatural's habit of fridging(*) female characters, instead of cheering it on. Fans started begging for more female (as well as POC and LGBT) characters to appear on the show, and realized that the cast being almost entirely composed of white men (angels are technically agender eldritch beings but we still see mostly white men on screen) was not the greatest thing. Nowadays, there are many beloved female characters who are whole-heartedly embraced by the fans, and most of the ones listed here have become much more popular over time. One time in a more recent season, a female character was unceremoniously fridged, and fans complained so much the showrunners eventually brought her back, in a complete reversal from the early fandom. There's even a popular ship between Sam and a female hunter! It just took time. The Supernatural fandom would stay almost entirely centered on Livejournal until 2011, when they started their move to tumblr and AO3. Supernatural would be its biggest during the early 2010s, when it became part of the tumblr behemoth SuperWhoLock, a combination of the Supernatural, Doctor Who, and Sherlock fandoms. I'm not very familiar with these days, as it is very difficult to research tumblr fandoms, and I've only watched Supernatural anyways. Everything I've heard suggests that it was a complete mess, as all gargantuan fandoms are. Today Supernatural is in its fifteenth and final season. There are four main characters now, and most of the episodes so far have featured popular guest stars from earlier seasons getting a send-off. Not how someone would have pictured the end of Supernatural looking in Seasons 1 and 2! The fandom is much less active than it was in the heyday of tumblr, as more shows have come out that might have interested the fans more, the two main sites for the fandom (tumbr and Livejournal) are less popular, and Supernatural is a zombie. But Supernatural being "less active" is still one of the largest fandoms on the internet. As for a small dessert of current drama... The fandom is currently doing some "conspiracy theory Destiel will totally happen" shenanigans, à la the Sherlock fandom. (u/urcool91 did an excellent write up of the Sherlock version of this drama here, as well as more info on SuperWhoLock.) Completely unrelatedly, Destiel fans have started calling themselves "clowns" because of how many times they've gotten excited over their ship only to have it not become canon. For some reason they've rebranded their ship to "DeanCas," seemingly to distance themselves from whatever reputation they gained back in their SuperWhoLock days. Uh, I'm just picturing the Destiel fandom wearing a fake mustache, going "Destiel? Who's that? We only ship DeanCas here," but whatever floats their boat. I also heard something about twitter trying to "cancel" Supernatural on the final day of shooting. I mean, I think any earlier day would have been more productive, but twitter's gonna twitter. The reasons seem to be the "women in fridges," which we've already discussed, and "queerbaiting," which I am not knowledgeable enough to speak authoritatively on. Here are some articles on queerbaiting in Supernatural if you want to go down that rabbit hole. (**) The ending will determine whether it will go out peacefully, or with Game of Thrones style hellfire. The fandom is so massive, with so many different facets and concerns, that it's impossible to have an ending that will leave everyone happy. Yet, after such a long run, I hope it manages to have a satisfying ending. TL;DR: The Supernatural fandom brutally attacks all female characters, thinking they will steal screen time from the two protagonists. They manage to bully the show runners into following their demands time and again. One day they fail to chase away a cute new male character, and ironically he becomes basically everything they feared those female characters would be.

The Extreme Price of Unconscious, Authoritarian Child-Rearing in Religious Families
Research since the 1940s (see below) has shown over and over that most people tend to raise their children based on how they were raised by their parents even when the next generation's "lifestyle" appears to be grossly different. (E.g.: Hyper-moralistic religiosity in one generation followed by a period of drug abuse and "wanton" behavior in the next.) Thus, the conditioning, in-doctrine-ation, instruction, imprinting, socialization, habituation and normalization) our parents experienced can be expected to be conditioned, etc., into each successive new generation. (See Baumrind on "parenting styles.") The net result is children who are blinded, deafened, dumbed down, and made sense-less… with consequences... just like their parents. Unless or until something happens to challenge that conditioning. Self-awareness is considered dangerous by the "authorities." The elimination of the self-awareness that would otherwise develop in children has been practiced at every stage on the pharaonic > Osirian > Abrahamic > Mosaic > Davidic > Josiahic > Isaiahic > Paulist > Ephesian > Augustinian > Thomist > Calvinist > Wesleyan track for over 5,000 years. See Recommended on Religion from Outside the Box and A Basic Cult Library, as well as Children direly need to know that they are seen, heard, felt, sensed and understood. In no small part because parents whodothat teach their children by example how to see, hear, feel and senseothers. How can that awareness-stifling conditioning be deprogrammed to return the brain to genetically conferred function? See Choiceless Awareness as an example of the mindfulness-based approach.
